Federal nominee won’t commit to Quebec English school board court challenge

News

Liberal MP Anthony Housefather says the anglophone community seeks reassurance from the prospective Official Languages Commissioner.

The nominee to become Canada’s next Official Languages Commissioner declined Tuesday to say whether she would support the Quebec anglophone community in its legal challenge against the Legault government’s bid to abolish English school boards. Last fall, outgoing commissioner Raymond Théberge urged anglophones to fight the move, calling it unconstitutional and vowing to assist in a court challenge of the plan to scrap English boards.

The federal Liberal government has nominated Kelly Burke to replace Théberge, who left the post last month.
