Quebec English Debate Cancelled

News

Concordia University Television interviews president Eva Ludvig on the cancelation of the English Language Debate for 2026 Provincial Election.

In an interview on CUTV’s The Debrief, TALQ president Eva Ludvig says the cancellation of an English-language leaders’ debate is a missed opportunity for more than one million English-speaking Quebecers. “We believe that political leaders seeking to govern Quebec need to speak to all Quebecers,” said Ludvig. She adds an English debate would allow parties to address issues specific to the English-speaking community, including access to government services and the impact of recent language policies. While translated coverage of the French debates is better than nothing, Ludvig says it cannot replace a debate focused on anglophone concerns. With no English debate planned, TALQ is urging party leaders to hold town halls or other public forums and is encouraging English-speaking Quebecers to engage with their local candidates throughout the campaign.
