François Legault’s tenure draws praise, anger across Quebec — and relief he’s going

News

While political and business leaders had many kind words to share, unions and community groups had a much different reaction.

François Legault’s resignation as premier Wednesday brought an immediate swath of reactions inside the province and across the rest of Canada, including praise from business leaders and political opponents. But there was also a sense of relief among unions and those in the English-speaking community who say they have long felt targeted by his government.

“He has shown us what it truly means to be a minority,” said Sylvia Martin-Laforge, the director general of TALQ, reflecting on Legault’s legacy for English speakers in the province.
