Growing calls for English-language representation during the Quebec election campaign

As the Quebec election approaches, there are growing calls for greater English-language representation during the campaign. At least three leaders’ debates are planned in French, but none are currently scheduled in English.

TALQ and the Mouvement National des Québecois et Québecoise, a Quebec sovereigntist organization are joining forces to call for more opportunities for English-speaking Quebecers to hear from the parties and leaders in their language. TALQ general director Sylvia Martin- Laforge says it’s now proposing alternatives such as a town hall, panel or public meeting “The heads of these parties have got to talk to the English-speaking community,” said Martin-Laforge. MNQ president Frédéric Lapointe supports the effort, saying an English-language event could help ease tensions, particularly as the PQ pushes its sovereignty agenda.
